Have you ever tried meditating? If not, go for it! Otherwise you will probably recognize this. You are sitting on your mat, closed your eyes, and you are bringing your attention away from your rumbling thoughts. You are just observing them, not diving into them.
It sounds great... and looks even better, doesn't it? But honestly? I think it is terribly difficult and find myself starting over and over again. Each time again I notice that I am caught up in a story, a worry. And not every other minute, no... every other second. I had never thought that meditating is such hard work. It is starting over and over again, every time. I found out that doing a yoga practice, or just a couple of poses only, before doing a sitting meditation helps. While standing and relaxing into the poses, the asanas, my attention is slowly drawing away from the thunderstorm in my mind.
For myself, I am finding out that it really does not matter how it looks and how straight you are sitting while meditating, it is about the intention rather. Yoga and meditation are about courage, the courage to sit down, being quit, and experiencing the powerful and tricking mind. It is about the courage to acknowledge that your mind too, without a doubt, cheats whenever it gets the opportunity :)
